Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa was produced before the Colombo Magistrate's Court by prison officers this morning (November 03). The bail order regarding the Krrish deal case was scheduled to be announced in the afternoon.

There were two conflicting reports regarding this order. One report stated that Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama ordered his release on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 and three surety bails of Rs. 5 million each, while also imposing a travel ban. Another report indicated that the order had not been issued even by the afternoon.

Key Points
  • It is reported that bail was granted in the Krrish case on a cash bail of Rs. 100,000 and three surety bails of Rs. 5 million each.
  • It is also stated that a travel ban has been imposed.
  • He remains in remand custody due to the SriLankan Airlines Airbus case.
  • The next hearing of the Airbus case is scheduled to be called on November 19.

Why He Cannot Walk Out Despite Being Granted Bail

Even though bail was granted in the Krrish case, the MP will not be released. This is due to the allegation of accepting a bribe of around Rs. 100 million in the procurement of Airbus aircraft for SriLankan Airlines. Comprising 24 charges, that case is being heard before the Colombo Permanent Trial-at-Bar.

He was arrested on September 04, and although he had received bail in several other cases such as the Airbus money laundering case, he continues to remain in remand custody due to the main Airbus case.

Charges and Bail Application in the Krrish Case

In this case, charges have been filed over allegedly accepting a bribe between Rs. 70 million and Rs. 100 million for facilitating the transfer of the land located at Transworks Square in Colombo Fort to the Krrish Company.

In seeking bail, Namal Rajapaksa's side presented grounds to the court citing that his mother had undergone heart surgery and that his father is 81 years of age.

What Happens Next?

The next hearing of the Airbus case is scheduled to be called on November 19.
