A fresh move has arrived to tackle hygiene issues at dining spots in the city. Colombo Mayor Vraie Cally Balthazaar announced that the Colombo Municipal Council's Public Health Department rolled out the QR code-based complaint system, kicking off in Wellawatte and at the Majestic City Food Court.

Diners who spot bad food or dirty conditions can simply scan the code, fill out a short form, and hit submit. The details are sent straight to Medical Officers of Health and Public Health Inspectors so they can step in and take action.

Keep the bill and the food

Privacy is protected under this setup, as complaints can be lodged anonymously. The Mayor also advised people facing bad food issues not to hand the food back to the restaurant. Instead, they should keep both the food item and the receipt as evidence for investigators.

Apart from the QR method, the public can reach the CMC Public Health Department by calling 011 267 6161 or by sending an email to cmchealthcomplaints@gmail.com.

Citywide rollout planned

The project will not stop at just two locations. Mayor Balthazaar noted that the plan is to take this initiative right across Colombo 1 to 15, pushing up hygiene levels and getting locals to help keep food spots clean.

What happens next

The initiative is expected to be expanded across Colombo 1 to 15 to improve food safety standards.
