Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena has directed the Government Analyst to explain the reasons for the delay in forwarding forensic reports to the Colombo Crimes Division regarding the investigation into the suspicious death of former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena.

The Judicial Medical Officer was also directed to submit the complete post-mortem examination report. These orders were issued after investigating officers informed the court that reports on four specific types of medication recovered from the location where his body was found have not yet been received.

Previous reprimands

The Magistrate, who had previously criticised the sluggish pace of the police investigation, instructed the court registrar on 14 October to formally communicate the court's displeasure in writing to the Inspector General of Police. The delay in providing the Government Analyst's report on the unidentified medications had also drawn court criticism on 8 July.

Mobile phone data sought

Investigators informed the court that requests have been forwarded to two entities, including a firm in Singapore, to retrieve data from the mobile phone used by Kapila Chandrasena. The company has informed the Colombo Crimes Division that the relevant data will be preserved securely for the next three months.

The court also granted permission to direct the relevant telecommunications service provider to convert the electronic SIM, or 'eSIM', in the phone into a standard physical SIM card.

What's next?

The case regarding the mysterious death is scheduled to be taken up again for further hearing on 2 December.
