In a heartening move, 27 young school dropouts from the Grandpass area are heading back to their classrooms. The Grandpass Police Community Policing Unit stepped in to make this special educational comeback possible.
Before their formal return to school, the children and their guardians were invited to the Grandpass Police Station on November 1, 2026. Superintendent of Police (Colombo North) Meedin, together with local police officers, hosted them for a supportive session filled with encouragement, useful guidance, and refreshments.
Building on Past Success
This project continues the ongoing work started by Grandpass Police Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Chief Inspector Dissanayake and Community Policing Unit OIC Police Sergeant Samarawickrama. Earlier, the duo helped nearly 30 out-of-school children across Colombo city enter formal classrooms.
Under this program, officers keep an eye out for vulnerable children at risk of misconduct and send them to the specialized unit for help.
Community and Private Support
Support also came from the private sector. Praveen and Gunaratne of AEC Property (Pvt) Ltd backed the project by handing over essential school supplies for the youngsters.
Following the initiative, authorities have called on the general public to inform their local police stations about any children missing out on school, so they too can be placed back into classrooms.
