Drivers noticing lines at pumps need not panic, according to the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation. CPC Chairman D.J. Rajakaruna stated that the state fuel supplier holds sufficient stocks and is releasing stocks continuously to keep vehicles moving across the island.
Speaking to Ada Derana, the chairman explained that recent trouble began when selected private fuel companies scaled down distribution because of operational losses. This created vehicle queues in spots where Ceypetco sheds are not readily available.
Priority for 52 dry zones
To tackle the issue, authorities mapped out 52 specific locations that do not have Ceypetco filling stations in close proximity. A discussion led by the Secretary brought together representatives from every fuel distributor to sort out the bottleneck.
During the meeting, the private companies agreed to direct their available fuel supplies to these 52 identified spots first.
Rajakaruna noted that small queues might still pop up here and there while private firms operate at lower capacity. However, Ceypetco has stepped up its own deliveries to cover the gap, ensuring overall distribution moves forward without disruption.
“There is no fuel shortage in the country. We have sufficient reserves and are continuously releasing fuel. The issue stems from certain private companies reducing their fuel supply due to operational losses. Consequently, long queues are forming in areas where Ceypetco filling stations are not located nearby.”CPC Chairman D.J. Rajakaruna
