A massive repair bill has pushed the government to act. President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that maintaining old state vehicles has become a heavy financial burden. Speaking at the National Trade Union Conference, he explained that plans are ready to bring in a new fleet to modernize the public sector and raise efficiency.
Digital services and new tech
The upgrades do not stop at vehicles. Outdated computers across state offices will also make way for modern digital infrastructure. Through this digital drive, new apps and online systems will allow people to get selected government services directly from home instead of visiting offices.
State institutions under review
A full review of state institutions is also underway. President Dissanayake noted that some bodies no longer serve their initial purpose and will be closed, merged, or restructured, while new bodies will be formed to face modern economic and tech demands. Calling on public sector workers and trade unions, he urged them to support these reforms to boost productivity and improve public service delivery.
