Taking into consideration submissions made by the Bribery Commission, the Colombo High Court today (05) issued an order freezing the bank accounts and vehicles of attorney-at-law Rakhitha Rajapakse for a period of three months.

Rs. 120 million bribe allegation

Rakhitha Rajapakse, Charith Abeysinghe, and another individual were previously arrested and remanded over an incident involving the alleged acceptance of a Rs. 120 million bribe from the wife of major drug trafficker known as 'Harak Kata', who was in CID detention, to have him transferred to a secure prison.

Although they were later released on bail by the Colombo Magistrate's Court, reports state that the Rs. 120 million allegedly taken as a bribe has not yet been recovered. Consequently, the Bribery Commission launched investigations into their assets under the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Funds in accounts and notification

In line with these investigations, the Bribery Commission had previously suspended four bank accounts and two luxury vehicles belonging to Rakhitha Rajapakse, with sources stating that the accounts contained around Rs. 40 million.

The Bribery Commission further stated that although officials visited his apartment complex in Rajagiriya on several occasions to notify him verbally, he was not present, and the notification was instead served on his wife.
