The Department of Meteorology has issued a weather warning. A disturbed weather system is likely to take shape over the southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining Andaman Sea around November 11.

According to duty meteorologist Udeni Weerasinghe, the system could develop into a low-pressure area around November 13. After that, it may intensify into a depression around November 15. Fishermen and naval personnel operating in those waters have been asked to be especially vigilant.

Heavy rain on the way today

Closer to home, showers or thundershowers are forecast across most parts of the country after 1.00 p.m. today. Some places might see rain in the morning too.

Downpours above 100 mm could hit several spots in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central provinces, as well as the Galle, Matara, and Kurunegala districts. The public is advised to take precautions against lightning and temporary strong gusts.

Warning for the seas

Sea areas around the island are also in for rain or thundershowers today. Regular wind speeds will stay between 20 and 30 kmph.

However, winds could suddenly ramp up to 60-70 kmph when thundershowers roll in, Weerasinghe warned. Naval personnel and fishing communities have been advised to keep a close watch on changing conditions.
