The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) has written directly to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, asking him to intervene and secure two debates in Parliament. SLPP General Secretary Attorney Sagara Kariyawasam stated that both issues carry national importance and must be taken up without delay.

Targeting monks and clergy

In the letter, Kariyawasam pointed out alleged incidents directed at Buddhist monks. He also brought up the behaviour of certain law enforcement bodies and highlighted online campaigns launched against members of the Buddhist clergy.

Questions over judiciary

The letter further questioned the sudden transfers of judges who delivered orders or rulings seen as unfavourable to the current Government. According to Kariyawasam, these sudden shifts have created doubts among the public, and clear answers are needed to protect judicial independence and trust in the courts.

With the Budget debate around the corner, Kariyawasam cautioned that attention could easily shift away from these matters, urging Premadasa to act fast and lock in the two debates.
