SLPP General Secretary, Attorney Sagara Kariyawasam, has reached out directly to Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa. In a letter sent on 08, he requested help to secure two urgent debates in Parliament on matters the party considers critical national issues.
The first debate focuses on what the SLPP describes as a rise in violent and derogatory acts targeting the Buddhasasana and Buddhist monks. The letter points to the constitutional duty of the State to protect and foster Buddhism, while also raising questions about the conduct of certain law enforcement authorities and online attacks against monks carried out by platforms said to support the present government.
Judicial Independence Under Scrutiny
The second debate requested by the SLPP touches on the judiciary. Kariyawasam highlighted deep worries over the sudden transfer of judges who questioned the government's decisions or gave rulings that went against it.
According to the SLPP, these unexpected transfers have created major public doubt. The party stressed that clear, open answers are needed to protect the independence of the courts and keep the public's trust in the legal system.
Push for Action Around Budget Time
With the Budget debate just around the corner, the SLPP expressed worry that these issues might get pushed aside. To prevent that, the party urged the Opposition Leader to use parliamentary and political channels to lock in two separate debates, either right before or during the Budget sessions.
