Big changes are coming to Kandy's daily commute. Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Prasanna Gunasena revealed the timeline during an inspection visit to the ongoing construction site.
The project comes with an estimated cost of US$69.3 million. It aims to collect around nine bus terminals currently spread across Kandy city into one central location, though shifting them will be done step by step and will take some extra time.
Road expansions and satellite stations
The project goes beyond just a terminal building. Plans are in place to upgrade access roads and set up satellite bus stations along critical routes heading into the main station.
Feasibility studies for these satellite hubs are already progressing. Construction work on them will kick off as soon as the studies wrap up.
Expressway link to tackle traffic
Several road works will roll out next to the terminal project. These include wider roads, fresh access ways, and planned four-lane routes that will connect with the Central Expressway development.
With all these transport projects coming together, the Deputy Minister hopes motorists will see a clear drop in Kandy's heavy traffic congestion by 2029 or 2030.
What happens next
Construction on the proposed satellite bus stations is expected to begin once current feasibility studies are completed.
