Cinema halls could barely contain the craze, and now the action moves straight to personal screens. Rajinikanth's latest blockbuster, Jailer 2, is getting ready for a massive worldwide digital debut on Prime Video.
The action crime sequel, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and bankrolled by Kalanithi Maran under Sun Pictures, has already collected $86 million at the box office. This astonishing sum makes it the highest grossing Tamil-language film ever made.
With this achievement, Rajinikanth now dominates the top three positions on the all-time Tamil cinema chart, with Jailer 2 leading, followed by 2.0 and Jailer, while Coolie sits at the No. 5 spot.
Star power and a dangerous new threat
Rajinikanth returns to his celebrated role as retired prison officer Tiger Muthuvel Pandian. The plot picks up right from where the first movie stopped, dragging him away from peaceful retirement when an influential crime syndicate threatens his family.
The project features an energetic soundtrack composed by Anirudh Ravichander and brings in big cameos from across the Indian film industry, including Mohanlal, Hrithik Roshan, Vijay Sethupathi, and Shivarajkumar.
The massive ensemble cast also includes SJ Suryah, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Mithun Chakraborty, Vidya Balan, Ramya Krishnan, Namo Narayana, and Yogi Babu.
“The response to ‘Jailer’ was extraordinary, and the love audiences have shown for Muthuvel Pandian has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey. With ‘Jailer 2,’ we wanted to build on that special connection while taking the story, action, scale, and emotional stakes to an entirely new level”Nelson
What happens next
Jailer 2 is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on Nov. 12 in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada languages across India and more than 240 countries and territories, joining the original Jailer on the service.
