Although Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's upcoming film 'King' is yet to be released, it has already secured a record-breaking overseas distribution agreement.

Reports state that international distribution rights for the film, directed by Siddharth Anand, have been acquired by Phars Films on a minimum guarantee basis for INR 1.75 billion.

Key Points

  • International theatrical distribution rights have been acquired by Phars Films for INR 1.75 billion.
  • The deal exceeds 18 million US dollars.
  • This is considered the highest figure recorded for overseas rights in the history of Indian cinema.

Pinkvilla report and investment

According to a Pinkvilla report, Phars Films secured these overseas theatrical rights for an amount exceeding 18 million US dollars, paid as a minimum guarantee.

As overseas distributors typically earn around 50 percent of the gross revenue, it is reported that the film must collect between 37 million and 40 million US dollars from international markets to recover the investment.

New record and distribution

Previously, overseas distribution for Shah Rukh's films such as Pathaan and 2023's Jawan was handled by Yash Raj Films (YRF). Phars Films had earlier collaborated with YRF and had also independently distributed films like Prabhas's 'Saaho'.

Earlier deals in this space had remained below the INR 1,000 million mark, and this new agreement sets a fresh benchmark for overseas theatrical rights in Indian cinema.

What's next?

The film is scheduled to be released during the upcoming Christmas season.
