People rushing to get their Taxpayer Identification Number certificates can breathe a sigh of relief. The Inland Revenue Department (IRD) announced that the requirement to present a TIN Certificate for eight specific transactions is pushed back.

The rule was set to be implemented on November 01, 2026. However, officials decided to push the date to April 01, 2027, following a huge increase in public demand for the documents.

Approval and new methods

According to the IRD, the postponement received the green light from the Ministry of Finance. Strong interest came not just from persons involved in the eight transactions, but also from the general public.

The original order was brought under Circular No. SEC/PN/IT/2026/05 dated 22 September 2026, following Section 103(6) of the Inland Revenue Act, No. 24 of 2017, as amended by the Inland Revenue (Amendment) Act, No. 11 of 2026.

During this grace period, the department plans to introduce alternative and simpler ways for already registered individuals to collect their certificates. Those without a TIN are urged to register online via the department's e-Services platform.

What happens next

The IRD plans to introduce alternative and more convenient methods for registered individuals to collect certificates, while the mandatory rule will take effect from April 01, 2027.
