Good news for travelers heading between India and Sri Lanka. The passenger ferry running between Nagapattinam and Kankesanthurai has introduced lower ticket rates alongside an increased baggage limit.

The Chief Commercial Officer of the operating company announced the changes to reporters in Nagapattinam. Under the newly introduced festive season concession, the one-way fare has dropped from INR. 6,000 down to INR. 5,500.

Big boost for luggage limits

Passengers can now bring along up to 30 kg of luggage at no extra cost. Earlier, travelers leaving Nagapattinam were granted only 10 kg free, while those departing Kankesanthurai were allowed 15 kg.

Previously, carrying extra bags came at a steep cost. Excess luggage fees were set at INR. 1,000 for 5 kg, INR. 1,500 for 10 kg, INR. 3,750 for 30 kg, and INR. 7,500 for 60 kg, though an additional allowance of up to 22 kg was later brought in.

Over two years of sea travel

The sea link has been running for more than two years, taking between three to four hours to cross. Regular voyages take place six days a week, excluding Tuesdays.

According to the operator, the service has transported 55,310 passengers across the waters for business, tourism, and religious travel during its two-and-a-half years of operation to foster ties between India and Sri Lanka.

What happens next

The operator noted that arrangements have been made to run the ferry daily, unless the Department of Meteorology issues bad weather warnings.
