Consumers can breathe a sigh of relief as the National System Operator announced today (05) that power tariffs do not need an upward revision for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The announcement was made during a stakeholder consultation held regarding the proposed electricity tariff revision for the October to December 2026 period.

Rainfall and reservoirs save the day

According to the NSO, this position is backed by current water storage levels in reservoirs across the country.

Expectations of above-average rainfall under El Niño weather conditions also helped eliminate the need for a tariff jump.

Previous requests and PUCSL review

This announcement comes just a day after the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) revealed on 04 November that the NSO had originally sought a 2.88% tariff revision.

The PUCSL had previously noted that, taking prevailing conditions into account, only a 1.46% revision could be approved. The NSO had submitted this tariff review proposal earlier to the regulator for consideration.

What happens next

A final decision on electricity tariffs for the October to December period is expected to be announced after the PUCSL completes the consultation process.
