Commuters have something new to look forward to. Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena announced that arrangements are being made to add 50 more buses to the Metro Bus service in 2027.

The project started out small as a pilot run with just 10 buses working on two routes. Today, it has seen massive growth and now runs 122 buses over seven routes, serving all three districts in the Western Province.

Going outstation and tech upgrades

Big expansion plans are on the cards. According to the Deputy Minister, authorities are planning to take the Metro Bus service outside the Western Province, targeting areas like Kandy, Jaffna and Galle in the future.

These upcoming steps were revealed after a meeting held on November 4, headed by the Deputy Minister. That discussion focused on upgrading passenger journeys and improving the LMT Go mobile application.
