A major scare hit Riyadh on Sunday when an attempted missile attack caused damage to a key corporate site. According to the Energy Ministry of Saudi Arabia, falling debris from intercepted missiles resulted in limited damage to the Aramco Tower located in the King Abdullah Financial District.

Thankfully, officials confirmed there were no injuries or deaths reported from the site. A Reuters witness saw shattered windows stretching across several floors of the skyscraper, which stands as one of the tallest buildings in the capital city.

Explosions in the Capital

The Saudi-led coalition stated that air defence units successfully intercepted two missiles launched by Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels aiming for Riyadh. Several blasts were heard echoing across the capital earlier in the day.

These loud sounds came shortly after Civil Defence issued an early warning alert regarding a potential security threat. Authorities later stepped in to announce that the immediate danger was over.

Rising Tensions

The Houthi movement did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack, and Saudi Aramco did not issue a statement. The incident happens as tensions flare up again after the breakdown of a United Nations-brokered truce that had kept hostilities down since 2022.

Recent escalations have brought fresh missile and drone strikes against Saudi facilities, along with Saudi airstrikes hitting Houthi-controlled locations inside Yemen.
