A Russian-origin, four-engine IL-76MD heavy military transport aircraft has touched down at Nyoma airbase in eastern Ladakh, setting what the Indian Air Force described as a world record for the highest-altitude landing by this model.

The massive aircraft landed at an altitude of 13,629 feet (4,154 metres) above sea level. Operating such a large plane up in the mountains is no easy task, as thinner air cuts down on engine power and lift.

Strategic Boost Near Border

The landing is viewed as a major strategic step because Nyoma airbase is situated close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the disputed border between India and China.

According to the Indian Air Force, the successful operation highlighted the capabilities of the aircraft along with the precision and skill of its crew, marking a key advance in India's strategic airlift capacity.

Upgraded Himalayan Base

The facility at Nyoma boasts an approximately three-kilometre runway built to handle both heavy transport planes and fighter jets. It was transformed into a full-fledged military base and officially inaugurated in November 2025 to beef up defence infrastructure along the frontier.

The base allows India to quickly dispatch soldiers, heavy machinery and crucial supplies to isolated areas along the Himalayan frontier, at a time when both India and China are boosting military assets following tensions in recent years.
