Fresh off a severe midterm election defeat at the hands of Democrats, US President Donald Trump took to social media on Saturday to ask UFC chief Dana White to become his next White House press secretary.

Calling White a violent fighter and warrior, Trump pleaded with him online to accept the post. The White House has lacked a press secretary since Oct 16, when Katie Zacharia stepped down after less than a week in the role.

Meeting in Washington

Speaking to journalists after a boxing event in London late Saturday, the 57-year-old UFC president and CEO stated that he was flying straight to Washington to sit down with Trump on Monday.

Earlier, White had posted a photo, which may have been AI-generated, picturing him at the White House press room lectern with a message saying he was moving on to the next chapter. Trump even suggested White bring six UFC fighters as advisers to help defend his administration against opponents.

Orders to probe Democrats

Trump also commanded the Justice Department to launch an inquiry into Democrats, alleging they are threatening people in acts of extortion at the highest level. Denying any impeachable wrongdoing inside his administration, he demanded prison terms for his political rivals.

The combative push comes just after Trump selected Stephen Miller as his next chief of staff following the departure of Susie Wiles. With Democrats winning both the House of Representatives and the Senate, Trump faces looming oversight investigations starting in January.

What happens next

White said he was flying to Washington and will meet with Trump on Monday, after which he will have more to say.
