Inter Miami superstar Lionel Messi has scripted history once again in Major League Soccer. The league confirmed on Saturday, on the final day of the regular season, that the Argentine icon has become the very first player to secure the MLS Golden Boot in back-to-back seasons.
Messi netted a league-high 26 goals in 31 matches this season. FC Dallas forward Petar Musa trailed him with 22 goals, while Sam Surridge of Nashville SC managed 21 goals.
Record run continues
During the previous season, Messi had found the net 29 times. That achievement made him only the second player in MLS history to score at least 25 goals in consecutive years.
The 39-year-old Argentine stepped down from international football earlier this year following a 21-year career. However, he committed his future to his MLS club by signing an extension through 2028 in October. Inter Miami ended the regular season placed second in the Eastern Conference.
What happens next
The MLS Cup Playoffs begin on November 19.
