Big developments are brewing between North American neighbours. President Donald Trump shared on Tuesday that the United States is getting closer to finalising a trade agreement with Canada.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Trump sounded quite confident about reaching an understanding rapidly. This comes after both Trump and Carney revealed on Sunday that they had engaged in discussions regarding the proposed deal.

Carney urges patience

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is keeping things measured, however. Addressing a televised news conference following a summit in Antigua, he pointed out that things are not completely settled yet.

According to Carney, Washington has stepped back on some earlier requirements. One dropped demand had sought to give Washington final approval over any future trade pacts Canada might sign with other countries.

“We've made progress, but we haven't finished. You know, if I were to paraphrase it, it's they're asking less and they're offering more, but we're not quite there,”Carney

Tariff troubles linger

Tensions have been running high between the two partners, with billions of dollars in retaliatory tariffs slapped on both sides in recent months.

The trade clash has also turned into a hot-button topic across northern US border states like Michigan and Maine just before Tuesday's US midterm elections.
